Kids Eye Care – Tips for Choosing the Best Eyewear for Kids

If your child needs glasses to correct vision problems, you have a reason to worry, but the reality is that there is no escaping from it. Eyewear is expensive, and children also do not like to wear them; however, if you take timely action, you will be doing your child a great deal of good. Timely action will not only solve the child’s problems, but will also stabilize and halt the deterioration of his/her vision.

What you need to do is to find the right eyewear for your child. While durability may be high on your list of priorities, you cannot just go out and buy the sturdiest glasses you can find. You need to find glasses for your child that are durable and practical, and at the same time, do not make the child lose confidence in his/her looks.

  • The first thing is that you have to rule out designer eyewear. Although these are comfortable and extremely useful, they are also expensive. You should avoid them, because the child will not be able to take proper care of the glasses. If you really want the child to have designer eyewear, make sure that you buy him/her one for regular use and a designer brand for occasional use.
  • Ask around for scratch resistant lenses. These come with a special coating and are great for kids.
  • Buy only flexible frames for kids. The sides of these frames are made in a way such that they bounce back to shape. If your child falls, s/he may get hurt, but the frame will easily bend back to its original shape. There are also frames that have a spring mechanism installed in the sides. These are suited for all, but are particularly useful for children. The spring ensures that the glasses remain slightly tight on the temples and will not fall easily.
  • Try to look for a warranty on the eyewear you buy for your kid. No matter how cautious you are in choosing the right eyewear for the child, the chances of the kid mishandling it are greater. You want to be sure that you will get a replacement if the lenses pop out, get scratched, or if the frame breaks.
  • Look for glasses that provide protection from the sun’s ultra violet (UV) rays that can cause harm to your child’s eyes. There are different levels of protection, and you will do well to gather information about it.
  • If your child plays a sport, then you need an extra pair for him/her. Sports eyewear such as wrap around frames is highly durable and will not fall off while the child is playing.
  • If you want the kid to wear glasses happily, make sure that you involve him/her in the selection process. Let your kid choose the shape and color.

Selecting the right eyewear for kids is not an easy process. The encouraging part is that there are many branded and non-branded products to choose from, and you are bound to find the right one that meets the criteria listed above.
